One Thing Clear
Idea coaching for founder-leaders
Make your vision land
Things that you’ve worked hard on don’t always come across. Will your customers see your vision? Will your team run where you point, or just wander off in various directions? Will investors get it?
It helps to have a space to test your idea out. With message coaching, you can find the gaps in your thoughts before others do. A fresh perspective makes your vision stronger, or brings up whole new directions.
Could AI do that? Not really. It can make your words sound smoother, or echo the ideas of others.
Coaching by an expert clears your mind and helps you land your message.
Success cases
Pinpointing the value of a company or team
-
Challenge: A founder was struggling to grow commercially. Direct selling was too slow, but potential partners never committed. Hiring industry specialists didn’t seem to be helping.
Progress: I helped him realize that the company’s messaging was hurting its growth — unfocused and hard to relate to. It didn’t matter how powerful the platform was or how much the employees knew their respective domains if it wasn’t clear enough to customers and partners what was really on offer. Reflecting on feedback from potential partners, one key phrase stood out from one partner who had seen the potential (though not been in a position to help commercially). That phrase encapsulated the value proposition of the company’s main product. This phrase became the center of a new messaging architecture: strong and clear.
-
Challenge: A product manager was asked to find strong customer use cases for MCP. Her development team wanted to present the raw capability to customers and hope that use cases would emerge.
Progress: I helped her identify two key use cases that would make the value relatable: a flexible way to import draft data, and a way to automate metadata tagging. She demoed these use cases, and three large customers committed to trying the capability in their organizations.
Finding new possibilities
-
Challenge: A General Manager of a broad-appeal product needed to focus on a few key vertical industries. But which ones? So many had benefited from the product, but none stood out.
Progress: I helped him reflect on market shifts, dead ends, and counter-intuitive opportunities. We eliminated three less promising verticals and focused on three others. I helped with a framework to evaluate potential acquisitions. We rejected a horizontal middleware offering in favor of an emerging winner in government & legal tech. The $34M acquisition brought growth and focus to the entire product line.
-
Challenge: A lead designer wanted to have more impact on the future of the product line. She felt frustrated not to get business support for detailed improvements to usability.
Progress: We reflected on what made business leaders pay attention that also improved customers’ lives. She found fresh motivation in developing a market-leading impact analysis solution that would save expert users a lot of time and bring the product to new customer groups.
Resolving conflicts skilfully
-
Challenge: A VP of product had bad news for some dev teams. Resource for their product would be cut, and some engineers would be moved to another product. How to keep them all motivated?
Progress: As we talked the situation through, he realized that there was a potential upside for those staying with the old product and those moving. (Those staying got more visibility and responsibility; those moving would develop new skills.) He tried out various scenarios before talking to the groups for real. It took several rounds of communication to reassure them all. But in the end, no-one left the company, and most engineers got on well with the new challenges.
-
Challenge: An engineering leader at a unicorn tech company was under internal pressure to deliver a new billing mechanism that risked alienating some major customers.
Progress: I widened his viewpoint from his previous sense of “himself versus the upper management”, to seeing that other managers stood to gain or lose from the success of the project. Although it was tough going and took some bravery, he communicated his concerns clearly to them, and gradually found more support around the business.
